Dr. Steven Cohen
Steven Cohen is a Plastic and Craniofacial Surgeon and Artist. The son of an Artist mother, Adele, Cohen began painting in 1984 after his wife Sheri encouraged him to try and bought him his first paints.
Cohen began painting expressionistic portraits and soon was working in a more figurative abstract technique as his work became larger and he added more color.
Cohen’s work has always been about a journey theme, a quest for a sense of place and an expression of one’s own destiny through the subconscious and from the heart.
By using a Rorschach type approach, Cohen places a light or clear wash on paper or canvas and begins to search for faces and figures, allowing the images to take shape without judgement or conscious planning, but by spontaneous expression. In this way, he creates new images that express his feelings and moods with an openness that at its best evokes a range of empathetic feelings from laughter to sadness.
Cohen’s art has been featured in galleries and other settings since 1987. He has had shows at Dartmouth Medical School’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center and was a long time artist at the Kiang Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. For a number of years, the French furniture maker, Roche Bobois, carried his art in their La Jolla, California location. His work has appeared at the Quint Gallery in La Jolla, California and he had a solo opening of his work in Paris, France at Gallery Beres in 2016. In addition, he had a solo opening at Concept Store, Marseille, France in 2017. His work has been collected since 1987 and is in prominent collections such as King and Spaulding, Atlanta, Georgia and Bill Walton, former NBA Hall of Famer and Dr. and Mrs. Patrick Hung Po, Taiwan.
Since 2014, Dr. Cohen’s work has been bought as donations for charities such as Fresh Start Surgical Gifts.
